So my first day of school was...interesting. My first class was Spanish 3, which I was nervous about in the beginning because even though I took 3 years of spanish in high school and have taken it both quarters at DU, I do NOT speak spanish very well. So I am sitting outside the class 2 mins before it starts, and there is no one in the classroom and I'm the only one sitting outside. So I start checking my schedule to make sure I'm in the right place, and the professor comes over and goes in the classroom, and I asked her if the classroom was for Spanish 3 and she said yes. So okay, I'm in the right area. 2 other girls come and sit in the classroom and the professor starts the class...and I'm thinking okay...isn't there supposed to be a few other people in here? Nope. They weren't kidding when they said they had small class sizes. There are only 3 people in my class including me! And both other girls are pretty much fluent in spanish and are conversing with the professor like it's no big deal, and I have no clue what's going on. I am seriously struggling to keep up. I kept feeling my eyes start to glaze over because my brain went into overload from trying to keep up with everything being said. And then the professor asks us if we are fluent in any other languages. The first girl says "Oh yes, I am taking spanish, plus I am fluent in French and Chilean." The second girl says "I am taking spanish, and I am fluent in French and I also know some Japanese." And then there is me. Oh no thanks. I just speak English. Super. So I left that class seriously dreading the rest of the semester. My next class was Australia and the Asia-Pacific which I was actually pretty excited about, except for the fact that it turned out to be more about Asian government pacts and pretty much the most boring class I have ever had to sit through. Today I had spanish class again. And to make it even better, on Wednesdays our Spanish Level 3 class joins with the Spanish Level 4 class for our lectures. So I arrived at 8am prepared for the worse. The Spanish Level 4 class consists of 3 girls, and our Spanish Level 3 class consists of 4 girls, and 2 girls were missing today. So there were 4 of us in lecture. I went in to the class not very optimistic, but surprisingly I understood about 90% of what the professor said. We also went over the imperfect tense which was the last thing I covered in spanish at DU so I remembered pretty well how to do it while some of the other girls in level 4 still hadn't learned it. So I'm feeling a lot better about it. I am actually hoping to be mainly fluent in spanish by the time I leave here. It is the most challenging spanish class I have ever had to take but I have learned a LOT in 2 days. My second class today was Organizational Behavior which is a management class. It is a pretty pud class. Kinda one of the more self-explanatory courses like Leadership (which I was required to take at DU and was the most worthless class EVER) so I'm thinking that won't be too tough. However we have to divide into groups for this big project this semester and we have to have "CEO's" in the group who are in charge of everything, and they have to sign up, turn in a resume and cover letter, and interview for the position. So I'm set to interview for that on Monday. Should be interesting. That means I need to tidy up and review my resume again! Other than that, I have Australia and the Asia-Pacific and Alternative Globalizations tomorrow so it should be a really exciting day since both the classes are taught by the same boring professor.
And in other news, I'm pretty sure I'm in the middle of a hurricane here in Australia. It has been a torrential downpour for the last 2 days. Tree branches are laying across the ground everywhere, and huge potted plants outside have been turned over by the wind. And as an added bonus, during this really fun and loud storm I figured out that my window doesn't completely shut which means it sounds and feels like the storm is IN my room. Yay.
